CORAL GABLES, Fla. – One man was killed and six were injured in a tragic hit-and-run car accident in Miami-Dade on Monday, April 19, 2021.
The accident occurred in the early hours of the morning in the area Northwest 119th Street and 22nd Avenue.
The injured parties were all traveling in the same car, a Toyota Sienna minivan that was occupied with seven people, which was heading down Northwest 119th street at the time of the accident.
Right before the collision, the Sienna was entering the intersection when it was struck from behind at a high rate of speed by a red Dodge Charger.
All 6 of the injured men in the Toyota were in their early 20’s and were transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition following the accident.
Unfortunately, 23-year-old Christopher Lopez was the seventh passenger in the vehicle, who was transported to Jackson Memorial hospital in critical condition where he died shortly after.
Christopher was sitting in the back right side of the minivan when it was struck and may have taken the most force from the on coming Dodge Charger.
Detectives say that the driver of the red charger abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene of the accident on foot.
“Our priority at this point is to be able to identify and capture and arrest the individual that fled from the scene and left these people for dead,” aid MDPD Detective Alvaro Zabaleta.
Police are continuing to investigate the accident and follow leads. Anyone with further information about the hit-and-run is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
You can donate to the Christopher Lopez GoFundMe campaign here. Christopher Lopez’s mother is pleading for anyone with any information to please come forward and help bring the person who killed her son to justice.
“Let’s help this family get a little bit of closure. It’s bad enough that they lost a 23-year-old family member, a young man just starting his life,” said Zabaleta. “Let’s help them be able to close this chapter and identify this person who’s responsible for this.”
