A man from Sunrise was killed Sunday after the motorcycle he was driving collided with a truck on Federal Highway.
The man who died has been identified as Guillermo Rodriguez, age 26. The accident occurred at Federal Highway and Southeast 15th Street shortly after 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Rodriguez’ Kawasaki Ninja 1400 struck the right bed panel of the truck at the intersection.
Police continue to investigate the crash, and no charges have been filed against the truck driver at this point.
The driver of the truck, Randy Pitcher, 70, of Fort Lauderdale, was heading home with his wife Ginny after a trip to the grocery store. He told officers that he turned left onto Southeast 15th Street from the southbound lane on Federal Highway.
“One of them just ran into me; I don’t know what happened to the other,” Pitcher told investigators.
Gianni Ramon, 24, who was riding with Rodriguez, said that the truck made a sudden turn in front of the pair. He said that the truck was moving at such a low speed the pair thought that it was going to come to a standstill in the street. Ramon told investigators that it was impossible to avoid the truck because it was moving so slow.
Rodriguez hit the right bed panel and was knocked unconscious. The man was transported to Broward Health Medical Center where he was ultimately pronounced dead. Ramon did not sustain injuries in the accident. Pitcher and his wife received only minor injuries in the crash.
Whether you are driving a motorcycle or sharing the road with drivers of two-wheeled vehicles, safety is your responsibility. Always be aware of your surroundings, wear the proper safety gear, and follow the rules of the road. When everyone takes responsibility for sharing the road properly, more people make it to their destination safely.
As police continue their investigation, it will be determined which driver in the accident was at fault. If Pitcher is found to be the at-fault party, charges could be forthcoming.
