In July 2013, the nation watched as George Zimmerman was found not guilty in the killing of Trayvon Martin on the basis of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law. This statute allows citizens to act in self-defense if needed. However, this was not the end of the story for Zimmerman. One of our attorneys, Sean Greene, was invited to speak about the case with Channel 12 WPEC, thanks to his expertise in the area.
Sean Greene gave several reasons as to why the jury reached the verdict they gave. One major factor was their sequestration, or isolation from the media. Another factor may have been the jury’s desire to make a quick decision and get back to their lives. Perhaps most importantly, the timing of the verdict played a major role. It was given late on a Saturday night, when people were busy. This meant fewer protests at the time of the verdict.
Now, however, Zimmerman will face the court of public opinion. He gets no government protection and has to figure out how to become part of society again. While other personal injury cases may not be as high profile, they still require expert attorneys for representation.
